Fringe World 2019: La Soiree review

On a cold and rainy summer’s night, a damp but enthusiastic audience crowded into a unique venue at the Ice Cream Factory for two hours of bold and glamorous cabaret.

A tiny red circus ring was the centre of attention for the night, hosting more daring and charming action than should realistically fit in such a small space. With artists popping up among the crowd throughout the show, the feats of strength, flexibility, humour and grace were never far away.

La Soiree is advertised as one of Perth’s favourite Fringe shows, and is back bigger and bolder in 2019 after three sell-out seasons. It’s the perfect introduction to the joyous entertainment that is Fringe World, with a fresh and fun line-up of razzle dazzle to spark the imagination.

La Soiree rounds up all the very best bits of cabaret – it’s celebratory, funny, cheeky, surprising and even a little naughty. From puppets and poles to wheels, swords, straps, magic and contortion, each act is impressive and the artists are some of the best in the world – think sassy puppeteers from Montreal and a spectacular Indian pole duo from Mumbai.

The highlights for me included the beautiful and ballsy Perth-born glamourous sword-swallower Lucky Hell, the dynamic, strong and oh-so-flexy Ukrainian circus duo Irina Bessonova and Vladimir Todorashko, the quirky Lily Martinez with her infamous red hanky act, and sixth generation circus superstar brothers Fratelli Rossi, who absolutely wowed with their daring and dangerous acrobatics.

But the best part is, with such a variety of acts, there truly is something for everyone. From smiles to gasps, laughter and riotous applause, no one in the audience was left unmoved. Experience this joyous and jaw dropping entertainment for yourself and see what all the buzz is about.

La Soiree has an extended season that runs through to 3rd March at the Ice Cream Factory.
